ReikiDharma.com Newsletter #2 Dear Friends! I hope that you are all well and that you are bathing and rejoicing in the divine grace, consciously. We are always in it anyway, but often don't realize the fact and need a little reminder here and there. For me these little reminders come in the form of beauty. A beautiful landscape, a beautiful thing, a beautiful song, a beautiful smile, and a silent moment. For the hopeless romantics amongst you it may be the same- for the others these reminders may come in the form of truth or virtue... So much has happened for us again this year, and I am amazed when I look back at all of it. We closed our language school a year ago and I have been traveling all over the globe teaching Reiki, Meditation and Family Constellations (For more info on Family Constellations refer to the article on our homepage). It has been very interesting to meet hundreds of Reiki practitioners from many different countries and cultures. I found that the essence is the same everywhere: Consciousness is all there is. Another Book And this is one reason why I spent a lot of the past year working on my fourth book, written in collaboration with Walter LŸbeck and William Lee Rand. We wanted to set an example for the Reiki Community to show that it is possible to work together- and to have fun! We pooled our energies and the product is beautiful. I am sure that many of you will find inspiration reading it. We are also proud to announce the birth of the "Hellinger Institute Japan". This institute, headed by my wife Chetna, will introduce the work of our dear teacher Bert Hellinger to Japan. And of course it will spread its wings beyond national borders. In September/October we will be inviting Mr. Hellinger for two seminars to Japan, a chance not to be missed! For those of you interested in family therapy (I think everyone needs it!), please refer to our homepage. Please let me know if you find anything on our pages that is incorrectly reported, incomplete, or if any vital information missing... This homepage is for you, and we need your help in supplying you with what you want to know. This time I would like to talk about something that has become clear to me over the past few years. The Western Reiki Tradition Mrs. Hawayo Takata brought Reiki to Hawaii in the time before the active involvement of Japan in World War two. This must have been a difficult time for the Japanese nationals and their descendants living in the USA. Mrs. Takata, we must remember, was an American. She appeared Japanese only. Judging by the way she wrote the Distant Healing Symbol, she was not skillful at Japanese writing. This is no shame, knowing that without constant practice even a first born Japanese national will forget her/his own written language over the course of a few years. My wife for example will complain after being abroad for five or six month, that she has begun to forget her Kanji, her Japanese writing. She will then write letters per hand instead of with her computer and will read Japanese books extensively to stay on top of it. As far as I am concerned I am often asked where I come from when I go back to Germany, my homeland. People say that my German is excellent, but they can't figure out where I am from!!! It must be my Japanese accent... We have to consider the social and the historical background of the times in the beginning of WW2 to understand why Mrs. Takata changed the Reiki system the way she did. We must also understand that the changes she instigated altered the actual Reiki practice greatly. Some for the better and some for the worse. From a student of Dr. Hayashi, Mrs. C. Yamaguchi, we now know how Dr. Hayashi taught and what the basics of his system were. The following issues were not part of it: The Christian story Dr. Usui never was a Christian. He never did work or study at Doshisha University, nor at the University of Chicago. The proof will be given in my upcoming book. Dr. Usui is buried at Saihoji Temple in Tokyo- a Pure Land Buddhist temple- not a Christian grave yard. Mrs. Takata's "successorshipî Dr. Hayashi was not the successor of Dr. Usui. He was succeeded buy a Mr. Uchida. Mrs. Takata was not the successor of Dr. Hayashi. Dr. Hayashi's successor was his wife, Chie Hayashi, who took over the Hayashi Reiki Kenkyukai after her husband's suicide.. The 10.000 dollar rule There was no rule to pay US $ 10.000 or its equivalent in Yen to become a Reiki Master/Teacher. The lifelong membership fee of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai in Japan at the moment is 10.000 Yen, approximately 100(one hundred) US dollars. Maybe Mrs. Takata the number 10.000... From Mrs. Yamaguchi we know that the cost for the master /teacher training in 1938 equaled about one month salary for a young teacher. This was by no means cheap, but it was affordable. The bottom line for me is, that everyone should charge for their expertise what they feel comfortable with. I personally find it unethical to charge 10.000 dollars for a weekend seminar. It is sad that Reiki has become a multi level marketing tool for some of us. No diagnosis In Dr. Usui and Dr. Hayashi's Reiki system it was important to make some sort of energetic diagnosis. In order to receive the second degree for instance, one had to be able to detect negatively charged areas in the body. Dr. Usui taught two techniques to his students with that goal, the "Reiji" and "Byosen" techniques. The more you practice your healing skills the more like you are to know what is going on in your client's bodies. You must be very careful how and if that knowledge is shared with your client. The oral tradition Both Dr. Usui and Dr. Hayashi gave out handbooks to their students. The theory of the "Oral Reiki Tradition" should therefore be disregarded. In my opinion this theory has been invented to deter Reiki practitioners from researching the roots of the Reiki system in Japan. As you know, I published Dr. Usuis handbook last year. The handbook of Dr. Hayashi will be published in "The Spirit of Reiki" early next year (see above). You should work as a Reiki teacher only Some students of Mrs. Takata were told to discontinue their work and to work with Reiki only. This had the result that Reiki teachers began to compete with one another. Unfortunately we still have to deal with this problem to this day. Mrs. Takata did not have a clear understanding of the ways the human mind works and did not have a clear vision of the future. And this will be our job- yours and mine- to make sure that Reiki remains available to the coming generations. The hand positions There is no strict set of hand positions in Dr. Usui's and Dr. Hayashi's Reiki system. This system was invented by Mrs. Takata to fit the Western mind. And, I think this was very valuable addition Mrs. Takata made. However, the hand positions should give us a structure without restricting us! In "The Spirit of Reiki", Walter LŸbeck wrote a very empowering article on the use of the hand positions. Self treatment Because there is no strict set of hand positions in Japanese Reiki, there is no self-treatment either. Of course Japanese Reiki practitioners treat themselves when they are unwell. In Japan, Reiki is primarily thought to be a tool to help others. Still I find self- treatment to be a wonderful tool, especially for beginners. When treating yourself on a daily basis you will learn how the energy flows in your body. You will learn where and when it flows and where and when it doesnÍt. Once you know your own body you can begin with working upon others. Conclusion It seems that Mrs. Takata deleted all the aspects that give Reiki the power to be a spiritual path from the Reiki system she learned from her teacher, Dr. Hayashi. What she passed on to us was at the most a de- clawed cat. And even though this may be good for the furniture, I doubt that it is good for the cat. I suggest that at least the core techniques in Dr. Usui's Reiki system are reintroduced into the daily Reiki practice. Due to our research those core techniques are: 1The five Reiki principles
