The Reiki Initiation

ReikiDharma.com Newsletter #3 Dear friends! April 2001 Welcome to the third Reiki Dharma newsletter. I hope all of you are fine and that you are enjoying your selves. After all that is what life is all about. With enjoyment I don't mean pleasure- hunting. I mean the ability to enjoy every moment of life to the fullest. In every person you meet, in every situation that you find your self in, you are confronted with your self... and with your self only. Knowing that, may make the difference in your life. In this newsletter I would like to talk to you about initiations. The Reiki initiation, the door to the divine Most Reiki teachers distinguish between the words "attunement" and "initiation". The first Reiki degree in Western Reiki of the Takata Lineage, for example, has four attunements. Those four attunements make up the initiation into Reiki One. An initiation is an invitation and a potential tool for growth. The real work starts after the initiation. As you all know, many spiritual schools use the tool of initiation. In Tibetan Buddhism for example, the teacher gives an initiation to the student to transfer energy and existential knowledge. It is vital that the initiation is given by someone who embodies that energy and knowledge. Just the technical knowledge of how the initiation is performed does not have the same effect. If you or I for example perform an initiation that we have read about in a book, and/or are not authorized to give, it will most likely be childplay and not much more. An initiation does not help you to become someone else. It helps to actualize your own potential, providing you work on your self afterwards. Are you content with who you are? If you find in your heart the desire to be something or someone you are not, go to the bottom of that desire. Find out why you dont love your self the way you are. I notice that it is a common belief in Reiki circles, that an initiation will change you. Let me tell you that you do not need to change. You are perfect the way you are, and the only necessity on your spiritual path is to cherish your self with all that it entails. My own experience with initiations prior to Reiki I would like to tell you my personal experience with initiations. The first initiation I received in this life took place as a teenager from my spiritual master, Osho. He initiated me into the Sannyas, the art of living a conscious life. You can judge the impact of the initiation not by the fireworks that it may be accompanied with, but with the after effect it has on your life. And the after effect, the actual growth is the responsibility of both student and teacher. This initiation turned my life around. In the following years I received several energy transmissions from him that gave me a taste of my true self. It took many years to integrate what I received in those blessed moments. Now, twenty years later, I realize that without proper grounding and a solid background of meditation, no initiation will have its proper effect. It works like a two- component glue: when you bring initiation and meditation together, something solidifies inside of you... The Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai In the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, no separate initiations were and are given for the different levels of Reiki. The student receives an initiation called "Reiju" every time he or she attends the weekly or bimonthly meetings. In this way the student is taught through the initiation on one hand, but learns by practice on the other. And we need two hands to make the circle complete. The most important ingredient of Reiki is practice. No muscle, no skill and no energy develops without it. As the student practices his/her skill, the teacher grades his/her development. In Dr. Usui Reiki system, a student is graded as Reiki two once he or she is able to find "negatively" charged areas in the body of the client. The word "negative", does not mean bad here, it means "inappropriate". In Dr. Hayashi's system the work with "byosen" (he indication of "negative" energy in the body), is equally important. What happens in an initiation? When working with clients and initiating others you become one with them on an energetic level. In this oneness your individuality temporarily disappears. But that does not mean that nothing "personal " is conferred in the initiation. You will notice that some individual flavor remains during the initiation within each and everyone of us. Experiment with your friends and students. If the initiating practitioner is single pointed, filled with of love and consciousness, the initiation will carry that flavor. How can you intensify the effect of an initiation? It has been my experience that it may help not to drink alcoholic beverages the day before you initiate someone into Reiki. Most likely you will feel crisper and more aware, more alive. Make sure that you are feeling well, that you are relaxed and that you feel comfortable in your body. While initiating, be single pointed. Give your total energy to the process. Take every step of the initiation as consciously as possible. Distant Attunements/Initiations As far as I am concerned, a distant attunement/initiation is an emergency measure. We are here on this earth in this physical body, because we can only grow spiritually with the help of the physical body. In the presence of the Reiki teacher, the spark jumps over to the student. This does not happen so readily over a distance. However, it does happen occasionally. Spiritual Masters have been known to initiate great changes in their devotees regardless of time and space, but most of us mortals are not able to do the same. One very important aspect of learning is commitment: If teacher and student are not even willing to meet each other, you can not expect much of an energetic transfer. However, distant attunements/initiations have their place. If the student is dying or very ill, for example. Or, if either the student or the teacher live in a war zone.... As you can see, the possibilities are rather thin. You must be careful not to use the skill of transferring energy over distance to act as an excuse. The same thing goes for distant healing: it is always better to talk to someone and meet her/him in person, than to send them energy to settle an uncomfortable situation the easy way. News from Japan In February of 2001, the Kurama Temple in Kyoto has officially dedicated my first book, Reiki Fire, to Sonten, the ultimate principle of the Kurama Kokyo Religion. Sonten is made up of Love, Light and Power. The Love Principle is represented by the Amida Buddha, the Light Principle by Bishamonten, and the Power Principle by the sacred Kurama deity Gohomaoson. Another name that is given to Sonten at the Kurama Temple is the same name we give to the Reiki master symbol. More Books My fourth book, written in collaboration with William Lee Rand and Walter Lubeck is finally available in English under the title " The Spirit of Reiki". The Spanish edition is available now. Dutch and French editions will follow shortly. Japanese, Russian, Greek, Hungarian and Portuguese editions of some of my earlier books are also forthcoming. And still more books I just finished a volume of short stories, which I would love to offer you to read as soon as possible. If any of you have a connection to a large US based publisher who publishes fiction, please contact me at Arjava@ReikiDharma.com Thank You!!! Website Update We have finally launched our revised homepage on the Internet, please let us know how you like it. The German pages will hopefully follow soon. Weare still fighting with the pecularities of the German language... Those of you who dont read German, and dont know me, will get a taste of what I sound like on the bottom of this page. As you may have noticed in my books, I always look different in each one. When I brush my teeth in the morning and look into the bathroom mirror I occasionally get bored with the way I look, and then... The same happened with our homepage. Also, we had some unexpected and very disconcerting problems. In the last few month someone hacked into our website and made some changes there without our knowledge and permission. Besides changing information, the person hid links on our website that lead directly to his own homepage. We became aware of this after our return from India and Malaysia in the beginning of March 2001. I dont know how long ago this happened, and I hope it did not disturb you, dear readers. It is possible that the same person hacked into our newsletter subscribers list as well. I am very sorry if any of you have received any unsolicited mail because of that, and I would like to ask you to report it to me. Since I dont want to say goodbye to you on this note, here is my favourite joke. As you all know I am German.... Latest from the EU.
