Reiki Dharma Newsletter Volume 13 June 22, 2004 Dear friends! Welcome to the 13th Reiki Dharma Newsletter. I trust that you are all fine and that life is showering its many blessings upon you. Like the rain that comes after a period of drought, every moment of life can be experienced in this way. You are enriched by it all: the mountain peaks and the depth of each and every valley carry you closer to your Self. Once again summer is arriving with the gifts of a lovely spring and I would like to share my thoughts of this season with you. Everything that happens in life has its place. This holds true for our Reiki- Practice as well. Whatever you may encounter is right, is important and is a potential stepping stone for further development. As they say in the Martial Art of Ninjutsu " Every moment contains the potential for enlightenment... All spiritual paths begin with someone who experiences a moment of truth. This truth is then wrapped up into a system of exercises meant to help the practitioner to reach the same truth the founder has stumbled upon. In our case, Dr. Usui experienced the essence when meditating and fasting on Mount Kurama in the North of Kyoto. After only four years of teaching Reiki, he passed on and left his students with little information about how to find the jewel of the heart. Now it is up to each and every one of us to look for the truth in all directions. What is truth Truth is not information that you have gathered from a book or from hearsay. Truth is what you have found in your own heart. An unfortunate habit that has evolved in Reiki is the thoughtless repetition of what we have heard from others as truth. Recently a lovely lady came to one of my courses who had been told by someone" Don't believe everything he says". My advice is: Don't believe a single word!!! Since we did not receive much direct transmission from Dr. Usui, we must rely on our own inner wisdom. This wisdom can be nurtured by always asking yourself for your own answer when a question comes up. What feels right for you? What do you feel? Experiment and find out... The Reiki Myths The reasons for creating a belief system may be cultural or personal. All countries and their people are unique: they do and see things differently. What is acceptable in the America may not be an option in Zimbabwe. Since Reiki conquered the world with the help of a few individuals who brought it to their home country, it took on some aspects of the carriers psyche. Reiki is very accommodating, and so everyone mixed his own cocktail(I do the same....). The result was that some helpful additions were made to the Reiki system and some rather silly ones. A few examples: In Hungary it is said that Reiki will punish you when you eat meat. In India they say that one must wash his hands with salt water before touching another... Out of our own insecurity we create myths that hinder us on our Reiki Path. Many of these myths circle around what is "allowed and " not allowed, what is "good and "bad, what is "correct and "wrong. Just by looking at these words that I have set in quotation marks, you can tell that these concepts are in the way of your development instead of nurturing the truth. When someone tells you that you should do Reiki this or that way- be warned! Remember that Reiki is an empty vessel that receives whatever you fill it with. So instead of filling it with rules/regulations/theories and intellectual concepts, just fill it with unconditional love. And it will reveal itself to you.. . Five minutes- or two and a half minutes? It is commonly taught that each Reiki position should be held for five- or 2.5 minutes. This is good advice for a beginner. It gives him a structure that he can feel comfortable with. With practice the practitioner understands how energy flows, and once understood he must break through the limitations of rules and regulations. A Reiki hand- position does not have a certain time- frame allotted to it. Learn to listen to your hands and know when the hands are to move on. No watch can tell you when the time is ripe. For more info on how to find out when to body has absorbed enough Reiki, please refer to my latest Reiki book "The Hayashi Reiki Manual", ISBN 0-914955-75-6. Distant Healing Many practitioners believe that there is a 15 minute time limit to distant healing. I dont think that we should make a rule out of the length of a treatment. A treatment is over when the body has received enough energy; whether that takes fifteen minutes or 150! I suppose that most of us are just not able to concentrate for much more than fifteen minutes while administering Distant Reiki. So, find out how long you can concentrate and follow your own heart. Reiki and psychiatric patients Working with psychiatric patients should be left to professionals, unless you can work together with the patient's physician. Reiki and Crisis Some of us feel uncomfortable about Reiki and emotional crisis, and they dont deal with what comes up for the client. If this is how you feel, you may consider learning some additional therapeutic/ counseling skills. Reiki brings out what is hiding under the surface and it can help the client work through what needs to be digested. When someone has an emotional crisis during a Reiki treatment I usually encourage it. If I feel that the crying has strength and is healing, that is. If, on the other hand, I feel that the client is just wallowing in his own imagination, I ask him to stop and come back to the present by asking him to look into my eyes... Reiki and pregnancy Some Reiki teachers say that Reiki should not be given to pregnant women, because the energy is too strong. But: Reiki is life affirmative, Reiki is life energy. And life energy will not affect the new life negatively, on the contrary. Whenever you have the chance to give Reiki to a pregnant woman- enjoy it. You will probably never experience such sweetness in any other hands on Reiki situation. Reiki and tumors Some Reiki schools teach that one should never treat a tumor, because the tumor would grow when it receives Reiki. This is absolute nonsense. Reiki helps the body find its natural equilibrium. Vegetarianism, smoking and drinking There is no direct connection between Vegetarianism and Reiki. I dont know about Dr. Usuis dietary habits, but being Japanese I imagine that he must have eaten fish. And by looking at his belly, I guess that he may have liked to eat- and drink Sake as well. Some of the most gifted healers I know smoke and drink more than moderate amounts. I dont suggest to you that you do the same: moderation is probably the healthiest path. Too strict a diet often creates more stress than a moderate one. When your body craves meat or a glass of wine: listen! Reiki and Operations This might be the only point in which caution should be used regarding Reiki. It has been found that Reiki may influence the strength of the anesthetic given prior to an operation. This may lead to difficulties because the patient may not go under so easily. As a result he will have to be given more toxic substances... So, dont reiki someone while the anesthetic is given. Giving Reiki to someone during an operation, after the anesthetic has kicked in- is fine. Broken Bones I have no personal experience with this issue, but have heard many times that Reiki may mend a broken bone too quickly. Make sure that it is properly set before you help the bodys inherent healing powers to fuse the bones together again. Keep this in mind when giving first aid to someone with a broken bone, and concentrate on helping him with pain/bleeding and shock primarily. Reiki and Money Reiki sessions and Reiki treatments dont have to cost money. If you give someone anything whatsoever you often expect something in return. If you dont- and you give unconditionally- everything is fine. But: if you do have conditions (be honest) it is better to ask for something in return. And for that money is the perfect tool. But remember: you are being paid for your time: the Reiki is free... Touching the clients feet In Germany some Reiki practitioners say that one should never touch the clients feet because all the negative energy comes out from them! The fact is that Dr. Usui himself gave treatments with his feet! Touching the feet of the client may be an eye opening experience for the practitioner. When touching someones feet you become humble and you remember what you are here to do. You are in the service of your client and in the service of the divine. Touching the client's crown chakra The crown chakra is one of the most important energy- gates of the body. It absorbs Reiki very easily and is a great position to flood the whole body with cosmic energy. There is no problem whatsoever touching this part of the body. Your clients will love you for it! Opening and closing Chakras Some of us say that they open or close chakras in Reiki- treatments or attunements. But beware: when a single chakra is closed- you are dead!!! I suspect that most people who speak about the function of the chakras dont speak from their own experience. And this talk is meaningless. Attunements Some teachers advise against repeating attunements. In the old days in Japan, the student received an attunement from his teacher every time they met. If they met forty times a year the student would receive as many attunements. With each attunement the energy level rose a little higher and this way the student advanced on the path. So: dont be worried about attuning each other frequently, knowing that the attunements will not make you a better person: this is your own job to do! In a relationship of two Reiki teachers, I suggest you re-attune each other when one of you is not feeling well or wants to re-connect. He will quickly feel one with the whole again. And now a couple of jokes before I say good bye until next time: 1- What did the Zen master say to the hot dog vendor: "Make me One with Everything." 2 Once a Zen Master was asked, "What sort of sex life do monks get?" The Zen Master replied: "Nun!" With love and a belly full of laughter, your friend Frank Arjava Petter Copyright © by Frank Arjava Petter, 2004 @
